Difficulties in learning Japanese

From my point of view, learning Japanese is quite difficult because of the rules that the language enforces in terms of grammar, politeness rules, writing (using a combination of three scripts – Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana) and so forth. These rules are not that hard per say, but it’s quite hard for us to put aside the system that we normally take for granted and replace it with something radically different.Another showstopper when it comes to learning Japanese is that the language is an agglutinative one. What this means is that it’s a “synthetic” language where each affix represents one unit of meaning rather than have the root of the word change. This concept is not easy to understand, or at least not until you get used to it.

Several aspects of Japanese grammar may be surprising to English speakers who are learning Japanese. For example, there is no distinction between singular or plural in Japanese. Moreover, even though Japanese grammar does not assign gender to words, Japanese vocabulary can vary according to whether a man or a woman is speaking.
Word order in Japanese may also pose some difficulties for students learning Japanese. Japanese verbs usually come at the end of the sentence, instead of near the beginning as in English. Since there are no relative pronouns, sentences tend to be long and complicated.
Japanese particles may be difficult, too. All the words in a Japanese sentence are connected by these tiny word fragments, which define the grammar of preceding words. And although learning a plain, spoken style may not frustrate you, as you advance in the Japanese language, you will find expressions of politeness-- honorific and humble forms-- to be somewhat mind-boggling, to say the least.
Japanese pronunciation is dramatically different than English pronunciation. Since all Japanese words end in vowels, English speakers learning Japanese may have to spend quite a long time practicing them to get the hang of the rhythm. At first, the tongue tends to tie itself in knots!
Learning written Japanese is not easy.

のだめになれるように

小学校三年生から高校三年生までピアノを弾きました。この九年間の中に、嬉しい時と苦しい時もありました。最初はとても楽しんだけど、ピアノ先生のせいで、だんだん嫌いになってしまいました。その先生はとても厳しくて、あまり優しくありませんでした。彼女は毎日少なくとも一時間に練習しなければならないと言ってくれました。実は、私はピアノが好きだが、先生の選んだ曲は全然興味がなかったです。だから、やる気がなくて、あまり練習しなかっくて、授業の時、私にしかられました。時々、すごく怒ったとき、私の手を打たれました。

エミリーちゃんはとても可哀想でした。

そして、先生の学費は超高くて、授業の時、私は弾きながら、彼女は外で家事をしていました。その上、先生は弾いた時、いつも引き間違いました。もちろん私より間違いが少ないけど、よくない先生じゃないでしょうか。

でも、エミリーちゃんはとても単純な子供でした。

先生の悪さを両親に全然相談しませんでした。学費が高くても、続きました。両親の一生懸命稼いだお金をむだに使いました。

エミリーちゃんは馬鹿です。

だから、もし今のエミリーは十二歳(その時からピアノを嫌いになりました）のエミリーちゃんと出会ったら、「あなたのピアノの先生はよくない」と言います。「他の先生を探した方がいいと思います。両親のお金を無駄に使いないで下さい｣と言うつもりです。

その後、エミリーちゃんは悪い先生の授業をやめて、楽しい先生を見つけます。また楽しんで弾いて、とても上手になるかもしれません。のだめカンタービレというドラマの中ののだめちゃんになれようです。きれいな曲を弾けます。その後、かっこいい千秋先輩のような人と出会えます！やった！

If I could change a decision I made.....

One decision that I made that I would change is the major of my undergraduate degree, I would have kept my initial choice to become a mechanical engineer.
